Does modern city life cause a loss of compassion?

I doubt it. I've seen more selfishness, heartlessness, and flat out hatred for other human beings living in a small town than in all my time living in cities. At least in a city, it's hard to pretend people aren't suffering, because you see it right under your nose every day. In small towns, problems get swept under the rug or "moved on" out of town.
